The Hockeystick tetra Also Known as penguin tetra, penguin fish or blackline Penguin-fish, blackline thayeria, after the black markings on its body. It grows to about 3 inches (7.6 cm), and hails from the Amazon and Araguaia river basins of South America and also refers to its odd habit of hovering at a head-up, oblique angle. The Loss of the caudal fin additionally hampered the fish’s ability to maintain its preferred head-up posture, causing the body to tilt even further. The species is best kept in groups, to allow the species to school, in tropical freshwater community aquaria with other peaceful, non-predatory fishes. This fish tolerates a fairly broad range of water pH’s, but prefers acidic water for breeding.
